School Rules
We have three major rules:
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
School Procedures
Here are some of our school procedures. To the right you will find a downloadable copy of the school student handbook that explains the school's procedures and expectations in greater detail.
Student Arrival and Departure Time/Procedures
School Day: Grades Kindergarten-6th 7:45 a.m. – 2:20 p.m. Wednesday – 9:10am -2:20 pm
Minimum School Day –Grades K-6th 7:45-12:45
Students may not arrive at school earlier than 7:30 a.m. (8:30 am on Wednesdays) unless they are eating breakfast at school, in which case they may arrive no earlier than 7:10 a.m. (8:30 am on Wednesday). Students arriving at school after 7:30 a.m. (8:45 am on Wednesdays) should go directly to the playground (unless eating breakfast or paying for lunch, in which case they will begin in the cafeteria and then enter the playground areas). Playground supervision begins at 7:30 a.m. Before 7:30 a.m. (8:45 am on Wednesdays) there will not be adult supervision of children on the playground.
In order to allow student learning and teaching to continue until the end of the school day, parents should wait outside the sight of the classrooms until the final bell rings each day. Please wait outside the fence near the bus loading zone or sit in the quad at the benches or picnic tables. You may arrange for your child to come and meet you at one of these places each day at dismissal.
Arrival and Dismissal Expectations
Student safety comes first. When coming to, or departing from school, students are expected to:
- • Arrive at school after 7:10 am (8:30 on Wednesdays) to participate in the school breakfast program; otherwise, after 7:30 am (8:45 on Wednesdays)when supervision is available;
- • Play on the playground until the bell rings;
- • Leave the school grounds promptly at 2:20 pm;
- • Walk bikes, skateboards, and scooters safely while on the school grounds;
- • Walk with a parent or adult to vehicles; running into the parking lot or street without adult supervision is unsafe; and
- • Wait for parents in the quad, in front of cafeteria, outside bus loading zone, or at the crosswalks.
- • If a child is late to school, the child should come immediately to the office for a late slip and the chance to sign-up for hot lunch if necessary. The office staff will then send the child to class right away to limit instructional time lost. If the class is in the middle of testing the student will remain in the office until it is appropriate to enter the classroom environment with the least amount of interruption.
Cafeteria Procedures and Expectations
The multipurpose room requires the serving of breakfast and lunch to large numbers of students, as well as providing space for assemblies and other educational programs. Students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and polite manner in the school cafeteria. If a student’s behavior is unacceptable, including such things as inappropriate noise level, not remaining in seat, not cleaning up after themselves, misbehavior in line, and not eating their own food i.e. trading or throwing food, the situation will be dealt with using the school wide behavior plan. Some possible consequences may be:
- a warning
- Removal from table for remainder of meal
- practice/rehearsal of cafeteria procedures
- loss of privilege
It is important for us to maintain our facility by keeping it clean. We must also maintain an orderly environment for everyone to enjoy his or her meals.
Assembly Procedures and Expectations
The multipurpose room is also used for assemblies, morning sings and other gatherings of large groups. The students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and polite manner during these times. They will:
- • Come into the cafeteria quietly
- • Sit in their assigned area
- • Follow their teacher’s and the speaker’s instructions
- • Ask permission to move or leave the assembly to use the restroom or deal with other emergency situations
- • Respond with polite applause
- • Exit the cafeteria quietly and in an orderly manner when the teacher asks them to
During assemblies a student’s misbehavior may result in the following consequences:
- • A warning
- • Being moved from their seat to another area of the cafeteria
- • Being asked to leave and take a time out in another room or the
- office
- The importance of good behavior while waiting for, boarding, riding, and getting off the bus cannot be overemphasized. “Safety for all” is the bottom line. Students are expected to:
- • Follow directions of the driver;
- • Stay in their seat (only 3 to a seat) and talk quietly;
- • Keep all body parts inside the bus;
- • No pushing, cutting, shoving, or fighting at any time;
- • No eating, drinking, chewing gum or littering on the bus;
- • No glass or animals allowed on the bus;
- • Maintain orderly and safe behavior at bus stop.
- The following consequences may be administered for failure to comply with the bus expectations:
- • Driver verbally warns student;
- • Driver moves student to a different (preferably front) seat;
- • Driver writes a first citation, principal meets with student and sends the citation home for parent signature;
- • Student denied bus privileges for:
- o 3 days (2nd citation)
- o 5 days (3rd citation)
- o 10 days or remainder of school year (4th citation
Bathroom Drinking Fountain Expectations
- Recess is the time to get drinks and use the bathroom. We strongly discourage students from using the bathroom during instructional time. Students using the bathroom during class time miss instruction and often waste time and play. We realize that emergency situations arise and we promise to be sensitive to special needs.
- Students will primarily use the bathrooms during recess time
- Students will not play in the bathroom areas
- Students will maintain the bathroom in a clean condition
- Students will respect the privacy of others while in the bathroom
- The drinking fountain will primarily be used during recess time and students will wait appropriately for their turn. The drinking fountains are there for replenishing the body with water, not to play or tamper with.
- Students are to stay on the playground area at all times
- Students will demonstrate non-aggressive behavior
- Students will demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times
- On the primary playground: when the bell rings students will “freeze” (place hands on shoulders and listen for directions). When the yard duty blows the whistle all students will walk directly and quickly to their class number and line up.
- On the Intermediate playground: when the bell rings students will stop playing, hold all equipment and start walking to classroom lines.
- Students participate in structured instructional PE periods throughout the school year to learn about the safety rules and expectations for the playground. Our expectations are very clear for students. To avoid harm to themselves or others, students are issued problem solving slips or subjected to other disciplinary actions for misbehavior on the playground.
- The first consequence for breaking any rule is the loss of privilege of playing on the equipment. If there is more serious misbehavior (fighting, etc.), then the usual serious consequences will take place.
